Awesome historical attraction, well, for those of us who love Indiana and US history. Nice, modern interpretation center that is located next to the well maintained house of the "President of the Underground Railroad." The museum tour guide did a fabulous job of presenting the house and the story of Levi and Catherine Coffin!
Have always wanted to see the Levi Coffin House as my great great grandfather knew Levi Coffin. My sisters took me on my 70th birthday. It's well worth the visit.
The Indiana home of the President of the Underworld Railroad. Levi Coffin, a Quaker who moved to Indiana to leave slaveholding North Carolina built and lived in this home with his family as well as sheltering approximately 1,000 travelers in need. A well preserved home with a well in the basement. Robin, our tour guide was excellent!
This was one of our favorite field trips ever as homeschoolers who love history. This was fantastic. Thank you. Very moving and well done. We even walked the shirt distance to the Willow Grove Cemetery to find the gravesites of William Bush and Emily Huff. The house is beautiful and the history is amazing. Thank you for the Fantastic tour.
Extremely well done. The hour long tour was very historical and informative. It included a 10-12 minute video to start and then the guide took us, a small group of about 10, on a tour through the house and barn next to the visitor center.
We went on a crazy hot day. This made the house crazy hot. But the last step in the house was the kitchen and that made it all worth it! Seriously, the sweat was pouring down all parts of me. My sunscreen was in my eyes. Joanna Hahn (I have her name written down but not in front of me and hope I'm remembering it correctly) was leading us through and just full of information. This was equally very old museum house and modern, interactive and informative. Great experience.
Lengthy review, but please read. It’s important! Nice experience however, tour guide, and her coworker had never heard the term “paddy-rollers,” and repeatedly called slave catchers/patrollers “bounty hunters” throughout the tour, which is incorrect. Found this very interesting, because “Slave Narratives…” is sold right there in the gift shop where the correct terms are stated by ex slaves who were interviewed in the 1930s and are in a variety of public domains and genres (e.g., the term paddy-rollers can be found in the history of slavery in the United States in academias, scholarly documentaries, on YouTube in a variety of formats including audiobooks, etc.). Tour guides should be required to learn the history and teach it correctly. Accuracy is important.
Amazing history of Indiana everyone should visit. The tours are intimate and cover the whole history of the Coffin family while they lived here in Indiana. Their home served as one of the main stops in the Underground Railroad.
